I was talking more about Fleming's books and the original character. The books are badly written and Bond is a one-dimensional glorified version of who Fleming wishes he was. They're also anti-Russian (obviously) and anti-American too. Bond and the crumbling British Empire are portrayed as the last bastion of civilisation in a world of primitives and brutes. Some pretty funny racism in some of them too
I've heard that Fleming wrote Bond purposely as a caricature of a Scotsman; an alcoholic brute who is a womanizer and a slave to Great Britain.

Bond is supposed to be half Scottish and half Swiss if I remember right. Scottish father, Swiss mother and they both die in a climbing accident when he's a boy. He is fiercely patriotic and basically enjoys killing for his country. Fleming was a big boozer and smoker and all the details of Bond's preferences (cigarette brand - Morlands, favourite drink - vodka martini, favourite food - scrambled eggs) were Fleming's preferences too.

Do you also criticize Captain Stabbin for not being an accurate adaptation of sea life?
You're telling me that this never happened on the Britannia?

I don't mind Bond. Goldeneye is probably my favourite. Was never a massive fan, but the films were fun to watch on a Sunday afternoon.

It's funny though, until I read this thread, I never thought of Bond as an incel fantasy, but it makes sense. I always felt really unnerved when I would talk to a Bond fan, sort of like meeting a comic book or Dragonball-Z fan. Like a "special" shut-in with little grasp on reality. A sort of detached cuntiness to the rest of the world.

It's just that Bond fans tend dress, and smell, better than your average nerd that lurks behind the figure section in Forbidden Planet.

Anyway, while I like Wesley Snipes, I won't be watching the new Bond film.

Bonds Scottish heritage was retconned after Connerys success with Dr No.
I remember being about ten and checking The Spy Who loved me out of the school library then wondering why Bond wasn’t in most of the book and it just seemed to be about some twat with wet knickers

Pierce Brosnan has the most class out of them all, although Connery's the best. It's not said enough, but Goldeneye was the peak of the franchise for many.

...Okay so, can we officially say that the franchise has been shit overall bar a few movies?

Even with Daniel Craig, only Casino Royale was the only watchable one.

Yeah Goldeneye was the best. Brosnan was a suave bastard and it's the best story. I have a soft spot for the Roger Moore ones because they were always on TV at Christmas when I was a kid but they're kind of camp and Moore looks ridiculous fighting.

I get why Roger Moore is beloved, he just came across like a nice old English gentleman... but his movies were the height of buffoonery.

Brosnan's underrated. He did a movie with Greg Kinnear called The Matador, and he's unbelievable in it. It's one of those movies where you think "ah this'll suck" but they nailed the casting.

Am I imagining it or did Moore's Bond do the most "shagging?" Always seemed to bed about 4-5 harlots per film. Of course 1 would get killed, 1 would turn out to be bad and then get killed and 1 would survive till the end, per Bond formula. But Moore would always get 1 or 2 more. Got the impression it was his favourite part of the character.

Will check out The Matador, looking for something decent to watch this weekend

I never thought about it that way, I thought Connery fucked the most women. Wouldn't surprise me though.

It's a good little movie, pretty straightforward. Pierce Brosnan has a moustache.

Most of the Bond films are watchable about from the shite one with Lazenby, the dumb bastard who couldn’t act and believed his retarded mick agent who said Bond movies were a thing of the past.
The Daniel Craig movies had potential, Casino Royale was great, Quantum of Solice was equally good and grounded. Then things went shit and ww got Skyfall, the film with a plot stolen from the first mission impossible movie.
And after that Spectre reintroduced Blofeld who’s no longer the head of an international terror organisation, he’s Bonda long lost zany wacky stepbrother.
Now we get Bond has retired, married and his 007 has been assigned to Nuffin, Dindu Nuffin

Honestly I'm not sure but Connery had a great line in one of the Bond movies. He kisses one of the girls and it cuts to them in bed afterwards, him with that fucking rug on his chest, and he simply says "I'm hungry, make me something to eat." And she jumps up to do it. Imagine that in a Bond movie nowadays
That's great shit. Any movie where Connery tells a bitch to do something should be in my library.

I'll say this about Skyfall: it was finally the film where Bond 'cracks' and can't handle the drugs and alcohol any more... like, the programming had worn off or something. The Javier Bardem villain was okay too, but nothing lead to anything. Oh and, SPOILER ALERT his real name was James Bond, because on his father's tombstone it said "James Bond". The fuck was that about?

Where we at with da Timothy Dalton?

Very underrated as a Bond. My father hated him, moreso than Lazenby (I defend "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" until the day I die though).

Most of the Bonds are terrible, even Connery's besides Dr. No and From Russia With Love. Bond works best when it is played more serious than as a straight comedy - I can only watch Roger Moore if I view it as a farce like Peter Sellers' Casino Royale.

And I like Craig's first three. Quantum was a misstep, but it works for the most part. Spectre turned into a shitshow, so I have no faith in the new one. But going back to Dalton, I'm amazed how disliked his version of Bond was when it was almost exactly like Craig's rendition, minus a little more humanity. He was a blunt instrument who didn't relish killing - he just happened to be good at it. The scene with the sniper rifle in "The Living Daylights" is a great example - there's no real quips in that scene, and Timothy Dalton shows the exhaustion and weariness of a longtime soldier on his face and through body language, saying more than any dialogue ever could.

The movie-going public really has always been stupid. No wonder Marvel makes a killing.

Who was the best adversary? Christopher Lee as Scaramanga was easily my favorite, although Jaws is always fun.
