Albuquerque is pretty shit. Despite being a West Coaster, I'm not into desert life. I would never live in Phoenix or Las Vegas, but at least there's some substance and modernity there. In Albuquerque you'll see a few hot-air balloons and there's a Native American tinge which is briefly interesting, but then you realize it's a wasteland.
I stopped at Albuquerque while driving across the country to get something to eat. It was a ghost town.
We went to the little area that looks like the Old West, and almost all the businesses were closed which made it look like an actual ghost town. It was funny

Basically anywhere in West Virginia. It’s dirty, cold, shit roads, everyone is a depressed meth head with some disability. All the women are fat and have 4 fat children by the age of 19, food is bad. There’s 0 redeeming qualities.
Ive spent some time there and enjoyed the nature...the rivers and hills are nice but the economy and pill problem is rough

Yeah I’ve rented cabins there many times and always enjoyed it. I’m considering buying one there actually.

I’ve never really hung out in any of the towns though, because why would you?

Sante Fe, New Mexico. It's a fucking little shithole that thinks it's so artsy and great because a couple famous old fucks like George RR Martin or Anthony Hopkins have a house somewhere nearby. The food is fucking dog shit mixed with red & green chili's and overpriced. The roads are shit. Every fucking building has that stupid fucking adobe look to it. Mcdonalds, walmart, even the goddamn hospitals.

Never been aside from buying some 10 or so dollar cartons at an Oklahoma one in the 90s but I imagine that they’re pretty dreadful.
In the 70s it became fashionable to care about the plight of the Red Man. The Feds built a bunch of new housing on Rezs all over the country for free. Within 3 years something like 80% had been stripped of all copper, wiring or anything else that could be sold for fire water money

Driving in New Mexico was absolute hell. I don't know how people do it regularly. How the fuck are the roads so bad?

Texas panhandle sucks, Oklahoma too for the matter. Once you cross the Red River you can instantly feel the need to turn and go back south.

By far the worst place was the entirety of Mississippi. The whole state is a shit hole, followed very closely by Alabama.

Detroit by a lot. My dad got us lost in a post apocalyptic wasteland that was like 3 blocks away from the bustling city part with the football stadium and shit. He ended up asking a cop for directions and he was like "What the fuck are you doing? Follow me and don't stop." He put the lights on. My dad slowed down for a yellow light and the guy hit the siren and gave him like a "KEEP GOING YOU FUCKING RUBE" gesture. We just cruised around Everyone-will-kill-you Detroit for like an hour like fucking bumpkins in a nice Eddie Bauer edition Explorer, the only car on the road with wheels on it. Every window was boarded up. Nobody was outside but you knew they were in those places watching you. It was like I Am Legend.

Reading, PA is exceptionally shitty, too.
I drove through Allentown in 2003 or maybe 2004 or thereabouts. It was at night, and it was just block after block of total darkness. Streets full of crumbling row houses, all soot covered, not a light or a soul in sight. Camden is the hoodiest hood that ever hooded, the most niggerish hood on the east coast. Not as big as Baltimore, but twice as shitty. And a block or two away from the casinos, Atlantic City is like Hamburg or Dresden in 1945.

That whole PA/OH/WV corridor is a wasteland. Tons of burnt-out old coal towns, with abandoned little main streets, full of dilapidated old houses and bottom-feeding trash locals. Everyone is either strung out, hopelessly drunk, or an annoying religious weirdo.

I've never been, but I know people who lived around there. The striking thing about Detroit's shittiness is how sprawling it is. It's not like there's one shitty hood section, it's miles and miles of shit, without any end in sight. Baltimore is the largest hood area I've ever seen, but Detroit is a total disaster well into the suburbs. I've seen those videos of what used to be nice suburbs, with trees and lawns, and it's a bombed-out wasteland.

Another one I forgot. Kingman, AZ. A place with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, that only exists as a filling station in the middle of nowhere. It's hard to believe that anyone would voluntarily live there.

Allentown is great and their only problem is that Billy Joel is a lying fucking singin' asshole. Uptown Fuck Off. How about that? Downeaster Fuck YOU.

(I've never been to Allentown)

The craziest thing was that we were like right in the hub of the city and then just took a wrong turn and like you said, just endless ghetto shit with no transition in between. Just BOOM you're in hell. It looked like some war-torn shithole. Looking back, my dad's demeanor was fucking hilarious. He was like Clark Griswold. At one point he asked a pair of negro security guards, an older lady with a red wig and a young man who looked like Jay Pharoah for directions like "Excuse me, homies, could you tell me how to get to the highway? Me and my young son here sure are lost and Canadian!" I remember the dude reaching his head way the fuck into the car over me and giving it a look around. We did have a cooler and there was definitely some grape Crush in there. We're lucky we got outta there with our lives.

Then we saw a NASCAR race. Which was a whole other kind of Michigan shit.
