They used too. But have watered down their shit. They would brutally bash people back in the day, Kathleen Kennedy got off pretty lightly here to be fair. Modern South Park is no where near as edgy as it was back in the 00's. I can't remember the last time they brutally bashed someone was, maybe the closest was Meghan Markle and even then that was no where near as bad as Paris Hilton/Rob Reiner/John Edwards got it.
One time we were all hanging around in the local park, and this fag named Danny came by on his queer moped. He was leaving, driving down the path, and this kid Tom grabbed a fairly big round rock, and uncorked the greatest throw I have ever seen. The kid on the moped had to have been a solid 60-70 yards away. We watched the rock leave his hand and we all thought "uh-oh" and he hit him dead square between the shoulder blades. He wiped out badly and was just laying there for a while, at first we thought he'd killed him. Good times. Not so much for Danny, though.
How was bashing Paris Hilton edgy though? She is an easy target and everyone mocked her. And the jokes were all juvenile like her coughing up jizz or her dogs killing themselves. Pretty much every single show made fun of her. Talk shows, cartoons, comedians, and so on. O&A ripped on her in person famously and got yelled at by Sirius for doing it.
Yeah, all shows in the early 00's did go after her. But South Park went further than the others and had her visually coughing up globs of cum. I'm not saying it wasn't juvenile, because it was. But let's be honest here, South Park was never high brow was it.. the fanbase thinks it is compared to things like Family Guy but it's childish as fuck. The fanbase huffs their own farts as much as the Rick & Morty fags do.
I agree with you there. They still try to play the "both sides" angle to a certain degree, but treat one side with kid gloves whilst the other gets a more thorough mocking.

They were also average schlubs in their twenties back then, making this stuff in their basement and doing drugs. Now they're 50 years old, married with kids, and they're worth billions with a boatload of people employed to churn these episodes out. As disappointing as it is that they've mellowed out, it's really not that surprising.
