Getting back to Eminem, he's gotten a reputation for being a shitty live performer too which is why he rarely ever tours and when he does people say he just lip-synchs through most of his set. Had a fried who went to see him after Recovery came out and they both said even being one of his favorite artists it was one of the most disappointing he's ever seen.

I remember Jay-Z was also known for being shitty live until he figured out he needed a full band behind him to sound better.

The worst I ever saw was Ja Rule - it was one of those ESPN X Games events where they had the sports going on inside / out and a concert stage and it was Q-Tip opening who was good but Ja Rule I’ve never seen such a shit performer. He make the crowd sing all the words except one and just mumbled whatever word he felt like singing into the mic. I saw Nas / Marley years ago and that was good and beastie boys were also good live.

I saw Kendrick Lamar maybe 6-7 years ago and it was the best rap show i’ve been to (I’ve only been to like 3 or 4) . He had an entire band and basically little to no backtracking, and 0 vocal backtracking. I mean one of my complaints with any live band now is this. Music is so digital and processed theres simply no way to actually perform it live which…makes seeing it live pointless

As much as I can't stand Kendrick's ego, I saw him at a festival last year because they didn't have any other sets going on during the headliners and it was a great set.

Pretty much that’s the only way you can have a good live rap show is to have a band behind you. I don’t know if that’s thanks to the Roots (saw them 20 years ago in Philly, great live) or trial and error but if they don’t have a backing band odds are it’s gonna be shit.

It’s gotta be nostalgia at the very least but I also think for the most part him being anti Trump. Eminem just can’t resign himself to the idea that he’s a comedy rapper. Remember when Humpty Hump rapped about the collapse of global worker rights following the fall of the USSR? No? Because he didn’t. He just got busy in a Burger King bathroom. Just make us laugh, Marshall.

I think it’s more nostalgia - most of his fans that were in high school when he hit are around my age (I’m 38 years youngggg) so now we’re not too old to go out and we have money to pay for good tickets (similar to how the boy bands like new kids on the block / bsb etc were able to do well couple years ago)

True, they either start to suck, go to the jail, or get murdered. It's just hard to be super relatable and edgy when you've been rich for 30 years. Eminem is 51, his daughter just got married, and he's probably going to be a grandpa soon. Most pop stars are relevant at that age with that much life experience. You're just supposed to ride the riches into retirement. I remember years ago he put out a song talking about how he has nothing to write about anymore and then I guess he just said fuck it and kept going.

Anyway, the best rap show I went to was Space Migrations with Chance the Rapper as an opener. Miller was playing guitar and piano and every act was live, no backing vocals, and it started on time.
