If you watch that video, the guy goes through why this sub is the Tomlinson backyard wood project equivalent of subs, funster.

So they apparently lost contact less than halfway through the descent. I'm gonna call implosion right now. Probably the best way to die in that situation. I get that the actual act is gruesome as hell, but it's over before you even know it's happening. Better than slowly suffocating deep underwater, knowing you've got no chance to live.

It's less that they use a gamepad at all, and more that they went for a cheap one. It's yet another blatant example of the fly-by-night nature of this project, like the no-escape hatch and the JB-Welded hull.
