It's a bridge, the brown nubbin type thing being the crown that attaches to an existing "tooth" or what's left of it. Meaning he lost at least two teeth fully if not three.

I think a big part of his decisionmaking is how he will spin things on facebook. Crappy job, low pay, barely human living conditions, complete loss of 4 months but I will be able to tell my facebook friends what a wonderful experience it is and how I only wish all of my friends were talented enough to line up a gig like this.
