Completely agreed. It's the first time I've watched a R* trailer and felt absolutely nothing, but then I remembered that I'm in my mid-30s and they're not making these games for me anymore. Gen-Z is the target demo now, so of course social media and influencer culture is going to be a core aspect. I'm sure it will be mocked to an extent, but if all we have to go off of is the trailer, the tiktok/instagram/snapchat shit is meant to be seen as "yoooo this shit crazy fr" instead of "this is hilariously stupid and everyone looks like a fucking idiot".what's off-putting to me is that the trailer feel like it's celebrating america's degenerate culture instead of lambasting it, which is what rockstar typically does. the whole livestream clip show thing didn't even come across as a spoof; that's just literally what it's like. where's the staggeringly unfunny satire, rockstar?
On top of that, the whole thing looked like an obnoxious mess of trash. The graphical fidelity looks good, but the visual tone is just gross, with the brownish filters and clutter. GTA:VC worked because it was set in 80's Miami, which was a memorable time and place that's glamorized in American culture. Coke, neon lights, fast cars, ridiculous suits, and shitty synth music. I wasn't around back then, but watching Scarface and all the other pop culture shit from that time made 80's Miami seem awesome. Current day Miami/South Florida is an undesirable cesspool with no interesting or redeeming qualities. Is there a lot to make fun of? Sure. Is it a place that I'd want to go to and interact with at all? Fuck no.
