I'm guessing that loophole is still there for now with whatever people are buying burritos with now, affirm or klarna or whatever, because I just saw the news story that they're finally going to partner with credit agencies. Not sure if you can get away with it anymore but I maxed out Paypal Credit and never paid them back a dime. They don't report to credit agencies, and the most annoying thing that came of it was some letters offering a settlement for half of what I owed, which I immediately threw away. They'd try to call me too but it's easy to lock your shit down with Google voice and anti-spam apps. Eventually, they stopped bothering with the letters. Thanks for the $7500, dickheads.
Not my con but I heard about some guy that scammed truckers out of 60k for a cartoon and ended up spending the money on a tranny.
Not sure it's a con but I've never had to buy a laptop. I always find decent ones at work and just keep those. I've given away a dozen of them to family over the years. Most companies just lease their normal ones and let the engineering guys buy their own because they need "special" ones, and they never get asset tracked. It's also how I ended up with a dual processor amd epyc 7452 server with 768gb of ram for my home lab.
