The difference is that egg farmers feed a bunch of their battery hens beta carotene, which makes their yolks a rich orange colour. They then sell them to rubes like Joe as "free-range organic" for 8 bucks a dozen.

We have friends who have chickens that are "free-range" (allowed to walk outside) and eat "organic" (worms and grubs, as well as the cornmeal etc they're fed). They give us eggs quite often. Do they taste better than supermarket ones? Yes, a bit, but then maybe it's the power of suggestion because you know they're raised differently and want to notice a difference. It's not like a completely different food or anything. And some of their yolks are pale yellow, some orange, some almost red. It just reflects what they ate.
