That makes no sense (his argument). Trump wasn’t being charged for a federal or state election crime. He was being charged with a felony in NY state. Part of that felony (Falsifying business records) is that there had to be an underlying crime he intended to hide. The underlying crime is the state/federal election law. So that argument just seems really muddy.
It's really muddy because the counts are really muddy. Ask some random people at your job exactly what this is all about and they're not going to know. It boils down to a misdemeanor with an expired statue of limitations. They had to jump through all these hoops to take it to trial and it was all over at that point since New York would convict Trump of starting the Chicago fire.
