The stupid part is that governments grant these charters to begin with. Corporations don't need to operate this way but because everyone is too stupid to understand how things work we just assume "durrr that's what corporations are, though."

They could be limited to one country or a small number of countries and have their charters revoked for non-compliance. They could have limited time charters. They could be told to balance profit with the good of their parent society but instead we just whine.
