Sometimes, a nice pork chop on a charcoal grill with a fresh salad can’t be beat.

Every summer, I visit my best friend in Chicago and stay with he and his family for a week. A small tradition we have is after he picks me up from the train stop, we drop into a grocery store in his neighborhood called Pete’s and I pick up a huge pork shoulder and other ingredients to make crock pot carnitas for the fam as a thank you for letting me crash. Every year I’m infuriated by how much better and cheaper meat and produce is there than here in southern California. Anyway, I also make a green salsa and we then have some awesome drunken, late-night carnitas tacos every night of my stay.
