Jackie said the only reason he laughed was to mark when a joke of his was used by Howard. Howard used to turn his microphone off to 'punish' Jackie for basically revealing to the audience when a joke was his or not. Because people began realizing that every joke Howard told came from Jackie.

For example, one time Cindy Crawford was on the show and Howard asked her how bad the sex was with Richard Gere because he had such a small penis. She said "how do you know he is small?". Howard said "he was fully nude in that Broadway show Blameless......they should have called it 'Penis-less' though". To which Cindy Crawford tried not to laugh but Jackie practically vomited laughter into the microphone.
Did he ever explicitly say that on air? I always thought the fans just assumed that.

As he should.

EXACTLY!!

Opie really deserves more credit for being the set-up/straight man that he was on the old show. Despite some of Ope's derailing flaws, his navigating the flow of the show is what provided new topics and bits for him, Ant, Jimmy, and the guests to expand and goof on. Opie was the leader and the one the overall pressure of putting a show together fell on. For Ant, less pressure on him to set-up the show meant more freedom to just chime in and be humorous, which is what he did so well and what fans gravitated towards. Ant as the head of a program works as well today as it would have had Ant taken the offer in 1994 to oust Opie back at WBAB: it just doesn't work. Since 2014, Anthony's awkward fake laughter, especially after something a guest says, is a hallmark of his uneasiness being the boss and leader in putting together a show's flow. Point-blank, Ant isn't a radio guy; he's just a funny guy that fell into radio.
It helps that Opie was the only straight man

Stern always downplays Jackie's contributions, but anyone with ears could hear how awful the show became after he left. It was instant, too, the show spiraled down the drain the next day.

If you're only listening to the radio show you're only enjoying a percentage of what Jackie brought to the show. You have to watch the Channel 9 show and all the other Stern projects to fully grasp why that crew worked so great together, and to really witness the spirit of the show in that era. Howard was the brand, Fred and Jackie were the writers, and they were given permission to dirty up Stern's name all they wanted. It made for some of the best "wrong" material ever, when those old jerks got together to write material for Stuttering John or just come up with bit ideas to pull out in front of celebrities. The show felt like a campaign meant to terrorize hollywood. The Artie years were amusing, but they were the start of Howard the starfucker who just wanted to do celebrity interviews and talk about his fancy life.

Jackie was never going to get that much from Stern. He made more money from standup than from Stern for sure. Artie said the same as well. One big gig like a New Year's Special could net them more than their annual salary from just ticket sales. Jackie also had a ton of very high selling books and DVDs that flew under the radar over the years. No one on Stern's entire staff got paid well including Robin and Fred and Gary.

Jackie basically made all of his money outside of Stern and then retired because the morning show routine was brutal. Billy West was a better example of dumping Stern to make more money. Even Stuttering John made more money outside of Stern. Jackie even returned to Sirius for his Joke Hunt show (which was hilarious every time) and seemed to have a good relationship with everyone.

You have to remember that Jackie was as big as Tim Allen, Chris Rock, Bill Hicks, and other huge comedians in the 80s. He beat out every single comedian to get the Stern gig and that became his big project outside of standup. By the time he quit Stern he was loaded and didn't need to work anymore except for fun.

Are you an idiot? One of the writers literally put the names 'Sheckler' and 'Harggus' on the walls in the cave in Lost next to each other. This was confirmed by the actual writers you dumb faggot. Are the Pat posters and new O&A fans from youtube all a bunch of retards? Go back to Kiwifarms please you moron.

Sheckler 197 was one of the names on the wall. As in Ted Sheckler. And his number on the cave wall was 197 which was the Sirius channel for O&A.

Harggus 202 was another name. For Paul Harggus. With 202 being the XM station number for O&A.

Kill yourself.

Some people want to create the narrative that Jackie went broke. He was probably begging to come back but only because he shut himself out in trying to out negotiate a jew, and pretty much everyone agreed the show was better with him. Artie added a necessary dimension, but Howard was better with Jackie, which made Robin better, and in general the show was more sick and evil with a focus. Not just stupid old howard talking about his boring wife and fancy restaurant outings, or watching reality tv at home while Artie stews in the background bored to tears and losing respect for Howard with every word.

At first Artie acted like a guest or like nervous Anthony Soprano Jr around Howard, a few years into satellite Artie was yapping over Howard, calling him faggy, telling him how gay and boring the reality show talk was. Howard tolerated alcoholics and addicts but when you start questioning him that's where you suddenly bottom out in his mind.

I asked Jackie about this at one of his standup gigs. He said that when he quit the show he slept in for like two years straight and didn't get up early once. I don't think he ever asked back on the show except when he made his podcast he felt that it would be a good fit to be on Stern's channel because the fans would want to hear his show.

Artie's dynamic of yelling and acting like a maniac was always something he did. On Stern, on Mad TV, on Joe Buck Live, on the Nick and Artie show. One time on Nick and Artie he stood up in the studio when they were live on air and urinated in a trash can because he was too lazy to walk to the bathroom. He was just a total psychopath. His story of handing the bank teller the note "give me a bag with $50K in cash" as a joke and then him getting arrested shows he had a long history of being an unaware goof.

I remember they actually showed that on directv, I think the show was done live along with Dan Patrick. I used to watch both shows and curse directv for dropping the Virus from their radio channels. They should have done that deal with O&A.

Nick Dipaolo has been trying to get a radio career going for decades, he relied on flakey comics then realized he could make bank doing rush limbaugh shit from home solo.

Yes. It was about the anarchy, how far they could push the envelope. Howard wanted to be as offensive and "outrageous" as possible, just for the fun of it. He was a troll long before anyone called it that. People who weren't around for it often assume it was a "show", with a format and "bits" and etc. But it wasn't. It was mostly total chaos, where they'd go off on ridiculous tangents all the time. They never said "let's make fun of Gary today", it would just happen, and all of a sudden they were two hours into goofing on him.
