The only one I'll ever defend is my fellow Scot, Ferguson. Didn't overstay his welcome and did his own thing. Was beating Conan for some time, too.

And he had the perfect gig: Letterman's Worldwide Pants owned that time slot as part of his contract, and, barring censor issues, the network couldn't tell Craig what to do. Dave had that as part of his deal to come over when he lost The Tonight Show to Leno, which he used to bring over Tom Snyder, then Craig Kilborn, and finally Ferguson.

That's why Ferguson left just before Letterman's final show: He'd have to change without Dave's protections, and we saw what that was like with both Corden and Colbert... Pure bland shit.

Fatty no talent Andy Richter is still enraged over this like it''s still 2010. Conan the person who actually hosted the show could still be mad, but you wouldn't know because he doesn't say anything about it. Andy went on some podcast ranting about how he hates Max Weinberg because Weinberg asked to become the bandleader on Leno's second run of the Tonight Show. What an evil man asking someone for a job after you made him move cross country only to give it up after 7 months because you wouldn't move back a half an hour to preserve the "sanctity" of the Tonight Show

Richter was always a cunt.

Every show he did bombed. Any attempt at a career after Conan failed.

So he crawled back and stayed through the firing into TBS, because he had nothing else.

Also he's clearly a cuck.

Fucking great point.

And he’s also not trying to do what Leno or Letterman did.

Conan's whole gimmick was arguably ripped right from Letterman's earlier years. Irreverent, experimental, childish in a "hip" way. Letterman was doing that silly shit a long time before.

I liked when that skeleton dickhole from Craig's show did that bit with that fruity documentarian, Joe Mattress. That was good.

All late night writers go to the same schools and hang out in the same circles and have the same personalities. It's like a hive mind of unfunny hackery. Letterman's act was just a gimmick as well. The real Letterman was raping interns on his private office casting couch for years. Then walking out and doing his "gee shucks golly" routine as the everyday man.

Vinnie Favale, Stern Show associate who left the infamous "Oh My Debbie" tape, was also notorious for sexually harassing women and trying to get his own casting couch set up in the studio somewhere. He would end up being fired for all sorts of embarrassing and hilarious sexual harassment allegations.

Howard met Beth in 1998 and started dating her. One of the first things he did was call Vinnie at CBS and have Beth get a regular gig as a background model for various Letterman bits. So in 1998 you start seeing Beth in all of these Letterman sketches doing things like holding up signs or presenting an object to a guest or whatever.

Conan was great at 12:35 with Louis ck and the Brian’s as writers. Once he moved to the tonight show he made changes that alienated old viewers, and still wasn’t enough for more mainstream audiences you could say he was neither fish nor fowl, and then he moved to tbs and went to Haiti, and never recovered. Also watch his documentary from the legally prohibited from being funny on tv tour you get the impression he’s a major asshole personally.

Letterman’s shtick was always being ironically smarmy and above-it-all, Conan’s was halfway between ironic nerd and ironic old-timey nerd. They were similar in that all late night hosts are similar, but Conan didn’t steal Letterman’s personality.

Also as much as I know this is going to get me roasted, Kimmel was pretty hilarious during all this. Leno had him on for some segment and Kimmel tanked the bit by confronting Leno about the Conan thing (“stop taking our jobs, we don’t all have thirty car garages”). Granted, Leno’s people still chose to air the bit so maybe it was all a work, who knows. Kimmel also did an entire monologue in character as Leno and did a pretty brutal impersonation of Leno and his humor, down to his bandleader overlaughing at every joke.

Ferguson is still the best. Went out on top, didn’t really give a fuck what anyone thought about what he was doing.

So I've never shared this, since it's technically hearsay, but supposedly I've met a guy who claimed to be a writer for him in the early TBS days. This was years ago, and from what I remembered, the name he gave DID check out, but as this was a very random meet at a very random German pub, he was clearly being a drunken tourist with friends. Take this as you wish:

What Conan is, in that guy's opinion, is a chronic people pleaser. The kind who would come in and tell jokes to his writers - who are trying to write jokes for HIM - for an hour, then do the same for the crew after a show. It was a blatant approval seeking, almost obsessive. I guess that's always been his drive, and not everyone rolls with it. It's when he doesn't get that approval to his liking that he can be a passive asshole. However, he was otherwise always very cordial to everyone, gave eye contact, and was really good with names (i.e. The Tom Cruise).

I'll have to see if I can find the guys name, I thought I put it in one of my notebooks. I think he said he stayed for a couple years during the early TBS days.
