I wouldn't have ever discovered 90% of the music I listen to if it weren't for streaming services.

Not every artist can put out physical media.
How's about downloading shit from Kazaa that was mislabled as some huge band and it being great?

I found my band of Brothers box set the other day. It's just I don't have a dvd player anymore.

Hasn't it turned out apple delete downloaded films if they lose the rights to them?
Yeah, you can’t really build a digital collection with Apple because they just nuke your movies, books, TV shows, apps, whatever they want without warning.

My biggest bitch is when something new I want - usually a show - only comes out on DVD and not a Blu Ray.

I get it, licencing is cheaper with DVD. Like, obscenely cheaper. And manufacturing is so long paid for that you break even rather quickly depending on your pricing. But this is why I have a high end player - Panasonic DP-UB9000P1K, converted to region free, because certain shows and movies will never see a high def release.

Like Shoresy. You lads can lambast me for loving that show, but it doesn't overstay its welcome, it's much better than Letterkenny, I'm always laughing, and I have a soft spot for hockey ever since I first saw "Slap Shot". That's only on DVD though, and it's also because they don't want you to not sign up to watch it on Crave, Hulu, any of those services.

Cunts, the whole lot of em.

PlutoTV is good if you want that 24/7 run style.

The DMAN has been on Pluto since it started really, happy to see them expand their offerings. But the illegal ones were the best since you never knew what show was going to get its own channel. With Pluto it has to be obvious stuff that is big enough to get licensed. Still a better alternative to TV.

It was very different in the early years of Pluto. I remember they had random shit like watching ice cream melt for an hour.

The DMAN bought a "new old stock" DVD player on ebay... It has HDMI output with upscaler, it has YPbPr component output, and regular RGB... The DMAN has a few hundred DVD movies, not including a few select TV seasons.

In comparing the DVD version using HDMI up against the various Streaming versions (also HDMI on chromecast) the results are laughable.

Streaming is probably cheaper for these media outlets in the long run. Rather than manufacture ANYTHING, all they have to do is upload it once and pay for the CDN. It also gives them ultimate control over the content, should they need to censor something. You would never even know they did it. A lot of movies on streaming sites use alternate takes that were not in the original movie. They take a lot of artistic liberties. They are uploading a shit quality version compared to the hard disc. And that's not factoring in the streaming blips, hangs, and issues with pixelation.

I still have a Toshiba XD-E600 upscaling DVD player that I've since retired, but served me well for years. Had to buy a remote for it, but got it used online altogether for roughly £30.

I loved it. Simple software region free trick I found online, and it took every disc I've ever imported. Simple button for Sharp, Colour, and Contrast enhancements - although most times discs looked better with it all off. It was a helpful chap during my year of researching for the right all in one player, which the Panasonic absolutely is.

A lot of the old Warner collector editions DVD's still come up trump's when it's about the features - documentaries, period piece propaganda movies, even the original radio adaptations. Fascinating stuff when you're into that history. Those I have kept for that reason. If the Panasonic didn't make them look so good, I'd have kept the Toshiba hooked up. That was seriously the best DVD player I ever had.

No way. They pay for every single streaming use and have to store mountains of data. Their servers can barely handle anything popular. Something like cable or Bluray is far cheaper technology in the long run.
