Start watching some real football, and MAYBE you'll have some proficiency in places outside the continental US. Alot of my geopolitical acumen came from being an avid football (soccer) fan and learning about places the other team comes from, how easy or hard it was for a football culture to develop there, etc.

Divide the country into four geographic conferences. Eight team playoff, the top two in each conference meet in the first round, the top seed gets the home game. Those are your "conference championship" games.
