He was probably worried that if he stayed with Missy while he was recovering, she'd be waiting behind doors to scare him out every opportunity to try and finish him off. It's incredibly clear at this point that she's just biding her time so she can cash in on whatever remains of those nana bucks.

Maybe the most shocking part of his hospital episode is him actively cutting back on alcohol like he has a reason to live. He has no wife/kids, the money is drying up, his livelihood is just angrily complaining into a mic or on twitter, his friends are just people he pays, and he cant have sex without viagra which he cant take anymore. Beer is all he has left.
