I know that any official Metallica VHS had heavy overdubbing. I remember Nikki Six of all people pointing it out back in the day. I do think that Lars probably did put some effort in for a while and was probably a stable drummer until the late 90s. I could be wrong though and maybe he was total shit from start to finish but I have seen bootlegs where he is totally competent.

What are you talking about? punk drummers are usually the most competent members in the band by far. It's like the one part of the whole genre that actually needs to be remotely on point or it all falls to shit. I honestly can't think of any half notable punk drummers who sucked worse than their guitarists. And hardcore drummers played a huge role in pushing the boundaries until hardcore turned into post-hardcore. They weren't allowed to suck. Drummers are way too replacable to get away with being bad.
Lars obviously isn't the worst drummer of all time, but he did openly stop caring about drumming and just didn't get better with time. The longer he has a song in his repertoire, the worse he gets at playing it, which is pretty impressive for a professional musician.

Look at gay Motley Crue, Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx can barely play at all and they still sold millions of records. No one bought Van Halen albums to hear Eddie's brother's pedestrian drumming.

I would agree that Lars became worse as the years went along. Way back in the day, no one bought the first three Metallica records and said "boy, this band is good but the drums are awful". That observation came later.

There was an aspect to that faggotry no one ever mentions. Back in the mid-to-late 1990s, soundtrack albums became all the rage. Some piece of shit movie would come out, and the record labels would put together a soundtrack CD for that movie. These albums typically featured a BRAND NEW SONG from a major band, like Metallica or RATM or whoever, with the idea being that Metallica fans would buy the disc in droves to obtain that BRAND NEW SONG, no matter what other awful shit the disc contained. Of course, these were not BRAND NEW SONGS at all, but merely outtakes deemed not good enough for their actual releases. But for the labels, these soundtrack albums were real cash cows, and very profitable.

Then, along came MP3s and file sharing, which enabled fans to obtain these BRAND NEW SONGS without dropping $16.99 on a shitty CD at the mall. And the labels were not pleased by this. So, at least to some of us, a guy like Lars Ulrich wasn't just being a whiny fag crying about his music being "stolen", but he was something even worse...a pathetic mouthpiece for lowlife record company scumbags. Gene Simmons is another one, always blubbering about "the fans stealing his music", even though everything he's done since the advent of MP3s is total trash he doesn't even really play on.

I would also agree that he is not a particularly good live drummer, at all. The footage of Dave Lombardo filling in for Lars that one time aptly demonstrates that. But my main gripe re: Ulrich isn't that he's a shitty drummer as much as he's just a shitty person. He's one of those guys who really needed to be beaten up, but never was.

IMO the biggest issue with post-2000 Metallica is their complete inability to self-edit. They have Iron Maiden syndrome, where they figure if a four-minute tune is good, stretching it out to eight or nine minutes makes it better. And it's just so misguided and gay. Like that Hardwired thing, which might have been a halfway decent 35 minute album, if they had refrained from repeating EVERY SINGLE PART of EVERY SINGLE SONG over and over and over again. They're not the only old-school band guilty of this, either.
