Basically, when it came time to record drums, Lars had no idea what an upbeat and downbeat are. The producer had to teach him basic music theory. When people say Metallica’s later stuff sucked, it was Lar’s drumming and Kirk Hammets same pentatonic run

He is a shit drummer, but his skill has declined a lot. I was watching the Moscow 1991 show and he was competent by that point. I always thought it was funny that James Hetfield is a better drummer and guitar player than Lars and Kirk. Metallica wanted John Bush of Armored Saint and later Anthrax to sing for them. That would of been interesting to hear. He did sing with Metallica at some anniversary shows they held.

Yeah, Lars has never been a virtuoso, but I think the "Lars sucks" stuff is overblown when it comes to the old stuff. He's totally competent by the mid-80's, and the drumming on Justice is quite good. He didn't become noticeably bad until the 2000's, when even he admitted that he no longer played on his own time or put any effort into progressing, and just rested on his laurels.

The drumming on AJFA is a bad example. The drums on that album sound weird because they are weird. They were put together piece by piece by the producer. Lars couldn't play a lot of that stuff live to save his life. Find those rare Dyer's Eve performances He couldn't play the double bass parts even half way decently.

He is carried by the band to be forgettable. There are great drummers that don't rely on double bass. Faith No More's Puffy is a terrific drummer and isn't doing anything immediately impressive. Helmet's John Stanier is deceptively good. I'm actually surprised James didn't pull a Beatles and just record the drum tracks in the studio himself. If Lars didn't own equal shares of the band i'm sure that option would be on the table.

don't care. You could make compliations of any musician fucking up, especially if they're as documented as metallica. fact is lars is more than capable of keeping up the rythm and feel of mettallica's catchy pop tunes, and throwing a fit about him is just level 1 tryhard shit
