I find it's preferable to dump them feet-first, as when you do it head-first, they often land in an awkward position, and you end up having to climb in there and straighten them all out before you fill in the hole. But there is no "right" answer that covers every possible eventuality. Hole depth, like in several other situations, that's the key. Like the old saying goes, bury too shallow, plans go fallow.
