That's why I typically pick up my food directly from the restaurant.

Every single restaurant and takeout place here requires you to op out of leaving a tip. When you pay with a card they will always ask you for a "10, 20, 40, or 0% tip" before you can pay instead of just being able to directly pay for your food and leave. And now a few places if you pay with cash have the teller literally ask you for a tip. "Your total is $40 unless you'd like to leave a tip".

"Yeah I want to leave a 40% gratuity tip for picking up a pizza on my way home from work".

American waiters/waitresses probably make more than their European counterparts as a result though.

If the tips are not reported and taxed then they make way more. The IRS standard for reporting tips is that if you receive $20 or a more....in one month.....you must report it to the IRS and the government. Yet no one does.

And because these scccumbags don’t want to pay this woman a living wage I guess i have to.

It's not just the restaurants but also the government. They could force wage hikes and outlaw tipping for service tomorrow and no one would object. I don't know a single person who actually likes how tipping works in America.

One time I was at iHop with a friend. We waited like an hour for our food because they were so fucking busy. My friend was talking about leaving a small tip because we were so stiffed and I said no and left a bigger tip. Because it wasn’t like the waitress was mmmmotherfucking us. They were busy. It's just an American way for restaurant owners to pay their employees less. The only other developed country I'm aware of that has the same system is Israel. Read into that what you will.

They're gradually eliminating the tipped minimum wage in DC, and it making the hospitality industry sperg out pretty hard. Some bars and restaurants are responding by adding a service charge (that can be up to 20%) AND suggesting that patrons tip on top of that, too.
