That's why I typically pick up my food directly from the restaurant. Service industry people love saying that if you hate tipping you should pay more for your food, which I would be perfectly fine with. But in that scenario they'd be making far less money and they know it. I know they're all drug addicts and their jobs suck and they dont get health insurance or anything but the martyrdom complex is real with them. When I have to tip its usually 20-25% and it's never because they're doing a good job it's purely because I feel bad. In the few times I've had furniture delivered I always tip really well for that cuz it's very hard work.

Thing is we do tip for meals and stuff. Not excessively but a little bit. Even though a lot of places include a tip as the bill now.

Most the time tips get put in a staff wide pot which seems ripe for the managers/owners dipping into.

You overvalue how much Americans actually tip. A good rule of thumb is the sunday Christian crowd don’t tip good. Nor do the blacks, mexicans, or asians. You basically just have to hope for white people

One time I was at iHop with a friend. We waited like an hour for our food because they were so fucking busy. My friend was talking about leaving a small tip because we were so stiffed and I said no and left a bigger tip. Because it wasn’t like the waitress was mmmmotherfucking us. They were busy. I've always tipped at least 15% in restaurants in the States because always was told a) that's the norm and b) the wait staff rely on tips and get paid practically nothing/hr. Had some pretty cringey and uncomfortable moments with waitresses especially. Sitting down at my table (Southern California), giving us their life story (also SoCal), overall desperate and OTT friendliness and enthusiasm (several places.) I have got some of the best service ever in the US too though, but probably prefer the polite yet zero arse kissing approach you get in places like Italy.

Probably? Most nights working in a nicer restaurant I was making $45-$50 an hour. The only people complaining about wanting a “fair wage” as a server are bad servers and people that have never done it before or work in a dead/cheap restaurant.

Also, to address OP, working in fine dining has higher expectations but is much easier than working at an Applebees type shithole. The customers are nicer and more generous and you have way higher average checks, which lead to higher tips.

Yeah, that's why I said probably. Some old bint working in a diner in Delaware isn't making more than a waiter in a Michelin starred restaurant in London or Paris, but no one working in a gastropub anywhere in Europe would ever consistently make the equivalent of 50 dollars an hour, no matter how busy they got.
