Im beginning to think Russia will play the Chinese, or whoever replaces Putin for sure. They've been bankrolled/guaranteed by Beijing since they slowly slowly Blitzkrieged into Crimea. Putin's character may have been a Chinese sleeper agent since his Berlin KGB assignment.
The Russians gave Syria up when Assad wouldn't do much heavy lifting on behalf of them on the Ukrainian frontlines (hence the more distant North Koreans recruited in their place).
They'll give Iran up next...but will get gains in Ukraine for it. How much/fast they abandon Iran to Trump's plans will be heatedly argued in Beijing's back rooms.
How I see it is they overplayed this 'smekalka' mindset while the elite stole too much. They're smart folks but short-term cleverness only gets you so far. Both Russia and China are stuck fighting the "last battle" (politically, economically, and militarily) because their economic and political systems are not positioned to highlight blatant inefficiencies and corruption but to perpetuate them and this seems to be pretty detrimental. Corruption is everywhere, but in a system with some checks and balances or diversity of interests, the intentions of the corrupt are manifold and are therefore diluted with the need to appear normal to some degree. A strongman can just take whatever they feel like.
EDIT: To clarify, at best I think they (either or) could maybe damage
