Would cutting off his gas for a fake leak even be that big of a deal? I'm not sure it would even get chilly in his house before they realized there was no leak and turned the Shut Off Valve back on.

Well, I believe if they shut it off then it's a crime if you turn it back on ... But if it's just a bullshit call, these days it wouldn't take but a few minutes to check and then turn it back on. I think it's all super science computerized now too, so they don't even have to come in your house really to see if it's leaking.

I bet he sent niki a text telling her about it. Making sure to put a damper on her peaceful xmas with family. He is a constant source of misery to anyone close to him. More that just twitter pity, he uses these to manipulate Niki. You can bet he is spiteful of her leaving him home while she goes out and has fun. He wants to remind her of the disappointment waiting at home for her return.

Absolutely the FBI definitely told them they were cleared of all suspicion for self swatting, and if they remotely said anything like that, it's definitely not like cops to lie to someone to see if they keep doing whatever bullshit they are clearly up to so they can keep adding to the charges against them.
Hopefully whoever vandalized his house and keeps swatting him will be caught.

He could have genuinely had his gas shut off in response to a fake leak report the first time around but they wouldnt have left him without gas for very long unless there was an actual problem with his hundred year old hovel boiler, or unless he acted like a cunt to the engineers when they showed up and tried to do their jobs. Gas companies can shut you off remotely, but they have to send emergency engineers to inspect every potential leak before they switch back. They definitely don't just shut you off and ignore it, then switch back on remotely with no oversight because they need to know they won't be turning supply on to something unsupervised with no pilot light. They send someone out to sniff out leaks, check your appliances and if you're all good then supply goes back on there and then, or you need to fix up your hovel first. However, if you are a belligerent pigman being obstructive so they can't do their jobs your supply will stay off til they can.
And if everything's fine, but the engineer just thinks you're an asshole and can be confident you won't die in the darkness overnight then they'll just say they are too busy to switch on right now and will have to come back another time. Its a classic tactic when dealing with pricks. Either he's completely full of shit, being hugely disingenuous, or someone at the gas company just thinks he's a dickhead.
There's a beautiful irony in the fact that if they had kids living with them the gas company would have bent over backwards to get it all toasty and warm in there again lickety split, but two disagreeable idiots oinking about cyberterrorists can go fuck themselves in the cold for a couple days.
