Just watch all of the news anchors -- everyone always goes to the Young Turks but if you watch CNN, Fox, on 2016 they're shocked that Trump won and said shit like, "Well, I guess we got that one wrong..." No venom or anything. Until like 2 days later when their masters told them. They even tried to persuade the electoral college in a last-ditch effort:

They were not prepared. That's why they pulled all the stops to ensure Biden not only won, but won with more votes than any other president in the history of the US.
The elite were so out of touch that they, for once, could not control a US election. They really thought no one would vote for him in enough numbers for him to win, so they didn't try. I think even Trump himself was shocked he won.
