WWAWD New Metallica?

Thin, squishy, honky guitar tone since the 90's
This made me laugh. Such an apt description. It's tedious, predictable, uninteresting music. You know where it's gonna go, then it takes it's sweet time getting there, and it always turns out to be nowhere. Those unbearable, sing-songy bridges and choruses straight from the Hetfield template, and Kirk playing the same solo in every song, it's all a big, soggy trudge.

Old Metallica fawkkiiin rocked though, despite me not listening to it much. The recording isn’t over processed, the playing has energy, and the energy feels authentic. Cliff Burton was the only person holding the band together musically, as James Hetfeld admits he didn’t even know what musical scales were before he met Burton. The biggest downside of their music at the time was their song writing because they write Ozzy cringe level lyrics.

And Justice for All was great, Black Album is their absolute peak. A lot of sonic and structural experimentation and you can actually fucking hear Jason Newsted on the album, which also he is an amazing bassist. Plus they got the hits in their for the casual listeners, with the songs still being pretty good and not phoned in shit.

After that it was all downhill. Load and Reload is boring borderline humiliating nonsense. St Anger might be their worst album, and i’m not saying that with any sort of bias. On every level it is fucking terrible. The lyrics suck and are the worst of any Metallica album. The sound of the album sucks. Hetfelds singing sucks. This was the first album where Metallica very obviously just copy and pasted sections of songs to avoid being creative. Death Magnetic was the nail in the coffin (no pun intended) with every negative trait of the previous album being turned up to 10 here. The only real difference is that this album doesn’t sound like it was produced in a garage, instead being over produced by Rick Rubin to the point where it’s completely lifeless.

After this there’s no point in listening. Death Magnetic was the last album where those guys, despite still being old, had the youth to pull off an album that could be good. More of the same happened with Hardwired to Self Destruct that made the previous albums so bad. More of the same with this new album.

I go fawkinnn deep with the music posting.
Load / Reload could have been great if they just put the best songs on one album. Too much filler.

St Anger got shit on for its drum sound but I like it and think modern metal could take a cue from it. Dunno how deep you go with da metal but every black metal band on a label like Season of Mist (except Drudkh) should have their shit overproduced drums swapped with St Anger’s and the music would be twice as good

I can’t shit on them much for St Anger because it wasn’t ready but the label said we’re putting it out anyway because we just booked you a major stadium summer tour. It was obviously demos and song ideas that hadn’t been flushed out which lead to them leaving their label they had been with forever. They were already in a bad spot PR wise post the Napster issue and putting out an album that wasn’t close to being ready was all around awful. At least they know it was bad and have made jokes about it at concerts.

Speaking of remix/remaster. Let's remix Load/Reload real quick, because it's when they really started to suck ass and it was supposed to be a double album and it should not have been. How self indulgent is it to make every single song about James' anger, and each song is like 8 minutes on top of that? No wonder they went into therapy. 79 and 76 minutes each? Fuck you.

1."Ain't My Bitch"LOL! Cut this down to a 90sec S.O.D. style anthem and this is funny.5:04
2."2 X 4"Butt rock. Cut.5:28
3."The House Jack Built"Is this about that retard from Tropic Thunder? Cut.6:39
4."Until It Sleeps"Keep it for the fruity music video alone.4:28
5."King Nothing"Very meta. You're clowns now. It stays.5:30
6."Hero of the Day"Someone compared this to Phil Collins in a professional review. Phil is heavier than this. CUT!4:22
7."Bleeding Me"Best track on the album.8:18
8."Cure"The "YEAAAH" during the intro sounds like James taking a shit. Cut.4:54
9."Poor Twisted Me"More butt rock and self loathing. Cut.4:00
10."Wasting My Hate"Under 4 minutes? I'll let it slide. Nice job.3:57
11."Mama Said"Gay crybaby shit. Cut.5:20
12."Thorn Within"Ripped off a Stone Temple Pilots melody. Fuck you. Cut.5:52
13."Ronnie"Another song about a retard and sounds like trailer park trash. Falls flat after intro riff. Cut.5:17
14."The Outlaw Torn"Original cut was over 12 minutes for this shit? 3 minute outro or else it's cut!9:49

We got 8 cuts right there. Six remain. And we shaved three minutes off the intro and over 6 minutes at the end. Can Reload finish them off?

1."Fuel"LOL! Why is this longer than two minutes?4:30
2."The Memory Remains" (featuring Marianne Faithfull)King Nothing Part Deux. Redundant. Prelude to Lulu. Cut.4:39
3."Devil's Dance"Corrosion of Conformity should have sued. Cut.5:19
4."The Unforgiven II"Eat my ass. Cut.6:36
5."Better Than You"You already wrote Wasting My Hate once. Cut.5:21
6."Slither"Boring ass hook. Cut.5:13
7."Carpe Diem Baby"Directionless and overproduced at the same time. Cut.6:12
8."Bad Seed"Nice Black Label Society song two years before they existed.4:05
9."Where the Wild Things Are"Some really gay vocal harmonies. Cut.6:53
10."Prince Charming"Forgettable. Cut.6:05
11."Low Man's Lyric"Are they covering Goo Goo Dolls or what? Cut.7:36
12."Attitude"wut? Cut.5:17
13."Fixxxer"8+ minutes for recycled riffs? Cut!8:15

Awesome. Metallica now has an 8 track LP ready to release. 35:18 total time. Just about the exact same length as Van Halen I.

If you ever watch that faggy documentary they did in the 2000’s it becomes evident how they make music. Nothing is fucking organic. All of Lars drums are quantized so everything is perfect. They literally say shit like “Alright we got a verse, we’ll loop that 3 times, then we do the chorus we loop that 2 times then we do a bridge”. They basically make music like following a cookbook.

As to why they think anyone wants this? They’re not thinking that because they don’t care. A.) Their fame and money is cemented. They could release an album of fucking farts and it wouldn’t hurt their bank accounts or reputations B.) There are people out there who don’t question the quality of music who will go THIS NEW METALLICA ALBUM ROCKS DUDE! but they would think it was shit if they didn’t know what artist made it.

Another thing that struck me in that doc is that their studio is like this enormous compound ( :image_9253:) with a thousand different recording facilities, instruments, couches, kitchens, catering access, staff/servants and so on, as if surplus and comfort improves the music. If anything, it makes it worse, and you'd be better off just going into a shitty garage with an actual idea.

What do they even have to express nowadays anyway? Like, what's their impetus for making music?
