The reason they switched was because they wanted to get more western gibs...they had the choice:
Abyssinia (Habesha) their local and old world name
Cush (Old testament name...hebrew)
Ethiopia (New testament name...greek)
they picked Ethiopia to align with the westernization of the world. It most definitely seems like a fucked up place, but there are levels to this shit. North Africans != Congolese, they might both be fucked up but you can't say they're fucked up in the same way. Sudan has it's own little military-industrial complex with production lines they imported from Iran and China, their military was one of the early adopters of the AR-10, they might be belt-sanding clits like there's no tomorrow but they're kind of interesting in some ways.
