For years after it's release, it was hardly rated at all. It was just a good bad movie that was fun to watch and laugh at with your friends until, at some point, people started taking it seriously. It's one of those cases where something over-the-top and corny is embraced ironically by a few people and then eventually dumber people start to celebrate it without getting the joke.
