They didn't craft anything. They filled a rental truck with fertilizer and (iirc) used a crude timer and detonator they learned to make in the military (McVeigh washed out of special forces).
I guess I can believe McVeigh knew how to make the bomb - but how the fuck did they acquire all those materials with no one noticing? This was right after Ruby Ridge and Waco, the ATF was just looking the other way at two former military dudes who didn’t own farms buying hundreds of pounds of fertilizer and other bomb making materials?

If I remember, Nichols was involved in some way with farming. Knowing how to get a hold of a bunch of bags of fertilizer would be pretty easy in the mid 90s with that background.
