There are two bypasses for this. The first is to bury the item you want to claim in your own shopping bag, select "using my own bag" and it zeros the scale. You can put your bags in the cart and claim your free items as you go around the store. The other way is to put e.g. a bottle of wine on the scales and tell the system you're weighing potatoes which nets you a fair discount.

I never steal when I'm buying booze though as I've heard that security fucks folk who steal luxury items but will assume you're poor and need to eat if you're just stealing a few onions.

I also have a system where I will calculate what I believe the value of the cart should be and deduct a corresponding amount from the total by stealing x number of items. Especially with tuna some time the store inexplicably doubles the price. My autism cannot stand for that shit.
