I don't know though, Russia was supplying the rebels in the Donbass, and that land was Ukrainian based on territorial agreements that the Russians accepted. I'm not sure it can be said they're totally blameless. The main issue really is the missile defense system NATO were surrounding Russia with. When they protested against it, NATO said it was to protect them from Iran, which is laughable. Having that in Ukraine, which is what NATO membership would mean, was in my opinion the main reason for the whole thing. The Donbass rebellion was just a convenient excuse. I understand why Russia did it, and ultimately, they're in the right.

I actually don't think the Russian government wanted the Donbass to rise up in the first place, I'm pretty sure that was all the work of independent Nationalist figures/groups. Because the Russian government treated the Donbass like an annoying smudge it wanted to ignore from 2014-2022. I believe the Russians did the Minsk agreements in 100% genuine attempts to end the conflict.

Russia wanted/took Crimea because Crimea is basically essential for the Black Sea Fleet, then Pro-Russians in Ukraine and Russian nationalist groups took it upon themselves to rise up in the South-East and Russia was politically forced to try and sustain them at least to avoid losing face.

Yeah there's truth to that. But Russia was more involved in Donbass than that, especially through Wagner. I also believe the Russians wanted peace, they acted in good faith throughout Putin's "reign". Also, yeah that's one reason they took Crimea, but I also believe it was a warning to NATO, not to take Ukraine into the alliance, because they knew that's what the coup was about.
