Wish I knew Japanese to research their side of it.

My folks went to Hawaii on vacation and of course went to Pearl Harbor because what family fun wouldn't be complete without gawking at the ruins of a tragedy, but anyway.
Couple of older Asians milling about, reading signs, getting more and more confused and angry. Basically wanting to know what the fuck is going on. They start asking people, who are trying not to make it awkward, because it's becoming more and more clear these are Japanese people.
Old white lady doesn't give a fuck and tells them all about what happened, kamikaze, aggressors, etc.
Come to find out, they never told the Japanese kids at the time about that shit, not a single thing. According to them, the US was the aggressor and were a bunch of fucking assholes who eventually nuked Japan for hardly any reason.
Now this was before widespread internet use, of course, but even now they barely mention it in their history books. The focus is more on oil.

I read that too, in a Bill Bryson book if memory serves. Apparently Texas, Wisconsin and a few other states had a sizeable minority of native German speakers at one point.

Yep, Central Texas has a lot of German areas. Fredericksburg has a wonderful little main street with lots of German restaurants.

Well we did nearly cripple them with sanctions and embargos. Their choice came down to end the war in China or have their war machine slowly run out of juice. They figured since the US was not directly helping its former allies in Europe they didn’t have the stomach for a big war. The US militarys almost comical incompetence in WW1 also made our enemies sceptical about our ability to fight against more formidable opponents than 1918 Germany

Yes correct. To act like the USA wanted to entice Japan into a war is dumb, they wanted Japan to fuck off and stop sweeping through China genocidally. They could've very much consolidated their chunk of China, defended it and chilled out. Nope, stupid nips thought they were a 6'7" 300lb jacked MMA fighter and could take on any and everyone.

The Japanese mindset was kind of admirable in a weird way, but not really a good way. It's the drunk dude at the bar who will never give up and will fight anyone tooth and nail. Then get knocked the fuck out by someone who is bigger than him and can actually fight.

There's a video on YouTube from Afghanistan 10 years into the failed US led invasion and the farmers there were shown photos of 9/11 to try and explain why the Americans were there. They were so unconnected to the outside world they thought it was one of their own cities and had never heard of the terrorist attacks so I can buy this story
