My folks went to Hawaii on vacation and of course went to Pearl Harbor because what family fun wouldn't be complete without gawking at the ruins of a tragedy, but anyway.Wish I knew Japanese to research their side of it.
Couple of older Asians milling about, reading signs, getting more and more confused and angry. Basically wanting to know what the fuck is going on. They start asking people, who are trying not to make it awkward, because it's becoming more and more clear these are Japanese people.
Old white lady doesn't give a fuck and tells them all about what happened, kamikaze, aggressors, etc.
Come to find out, they never told the Japanese kids at the time about that shit, not a single thing. According to them, the US was the aggressor and were a bunch of fucking assholes who eventually nuked Japan for hardly any reason.
Now this was before widespread internet use, of course, but even now they barely mention it in their history books. The focus is more on oil.
Yep, Central Texas has a lot of German areas. Fredericksburg has a wonderful little main street with lots of German restaurants.I read that too, in a Bill Bryson book if memory serves. Apparently Texas, Wisconsin and a few other states had a sizeable minority of native German speakers at one point.
