As a technical administrator of this forum I can say that I myself have tried to set up both postmill and another reddit clone. As they are open source they are not professionally maintained to fix enterprise level security bugs too frequently.

Without revealing infrastructure, using cloudflare, strict tls, locking down ports and some other security implementations broke the reddit set ups.

As they are more open source they don't work smooth with higher security and don't fix bugs.
I don't think that is an open source problem but a "lack of motivation among the developers" problem. All kinds of projects are open source that are just as good if not better than anything commercial, e.g. Linux, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, just to name a few. Of course those projects all have contributors from big companies and academia because they are widely used. I don't think a message board software is going to get that level of adoption that all kinds of developers will be trying to upstream fixes and improvements to it.

He's been paid all his money and there is no possibltily of future appeals, more subpoenas or counter claims.
It wasn't his money, it was the SFWA's, and we don't know how much more they'll throw at that fat fool's errand.

Pat could launch an appeal, which he'd lose but it's still more ass-ache and bills for Quasi.

Pat could launch either a new case in LA, leaving Quasi out as a defendant, or a new case in a different jurisdiction.

At this point I think Quasi's right to keep his head on a swivel.
