Why do you like wrestling?

Because it used to be loaded with tough guys and degenerates who were either fantastic athletes, actual fighters, raging psychos, hardcore drug users, or all of the above.

Then Vince McMahon came in, bought everything up, beat the Feds in court, spun off the old guys and relatively boring Bret Hart to WCW, and found lightning in a bottle with Steve Austin. The rest is history.

Vince McMahon is the ultimate CHAD. In a business where guys were shooting up in the locker room, stabbing each other in the ring, and pulling guns on promoters, Vince McMahon was not afraid of any of it. He brought structure and control to a wild business and brought it to the masses.

It was a time when the two most popular shows in the country were based on a bunch of muscular men lubing themselves up with baby oil to rub bodies against other men. AND IT WAS AWESOME

Well, there was Vince Russo who urged McMahon to make wrestling more "reality based" and to keep the product up with the times.

There's other guys who worked with Russo and McMahon like Bruce Prichard who talks shit about Russo, but he's a notorious liar, and Jim Cornette who is a wrestling genius who absolutely DESPISES Russo, but even that may be a work. The podcasts about wrestling are the most interesting aspect of the business at the moment.
Yeah it was Cornette. Something about how Wrestling shouldn’t be cartoony gay shit and be about the sport or something. I found it interesting because it showed to me wrestling wasn’t always the retarded shit from like 2005 onwards with John Cena types. Then again i’ve never watched wrestling at all so maybe this was never the case

There's so many aspects as to why the product can be shit. Wrestling as a whole lost its casual base in 2001 and they've never gotten it back. I stopped watching during the initial Cena push in 2005-06 like you mentioned, but him sucking or the juvenile nature of parts of the show weren't even the biggest problem: it was the years of boring programming that turned me, like many others, off completely. But, yeah, Cena sold a shitload of merch so they made him the top star and he was a faggot.

Vince must be a business genius because he's managed to make a killing as the TV ratings have descended into the shitter. How many people even watch now, 1% of Americans? There's way too much programming too, it's like you have to invest six hours a week and it's not even close to being amusing even.

I like it because it's kind of a soap opera for men with a sports element. Don't really like the modern stuff but if you go back to the late 90s or early 00s you had edgy storylines, hot women stripping and violence. What else could a guy really want?

It is a bit shit now with match ratings taking importance over everything else that used to make wrestling cool.

I liked it for a brief period as a 5th-7th grader, so I get some of the references.

I see guys my age in their mid and late 30’s sharing shit from this week’s Raw or AEW and it’s pathetic.

But hey I post on this board so who the fuck am I to judge ?

Wrestling = pure marketing. Every second is advertising for any dumb product you can think up. Marketing on steroids, and at its most shameless and pointless. Violence, Sex, Buttery Beats, Dark Comedy... I mean brooooding. You can fit anything into it.

I recommend Dark Side of the Ring that VICE created. The format is exactly the same as the Stern VS. O&A episode. The reenactments are typically funny, they usually get the story right, except the occasional “How COULD you????” pearl clutching they do, likely to avoid seeming like a TLC freak show. First 2 or 3 seasons were excellent. The last few have kinda fallen flat with me. I'm mad they have barely even grazed ECW, but gave those XPW copycat clones their own episode... Sick fawks.

They could do a full season on ECW which to this day will never be topped. That was the height of American entertainment for me. Sopranos done in 1-take in a ring. Fo Real... I was buried on the battlefield.
