I sat through a speech he gave in the city while he was mayor and his rambling Catullus references didn't go down well in a room full of time is money finance guys but there's no doubt the guy is bright. Wouldn't trust him any further than I could throw him (not far, he's fat) but he is a pretty canny operator.

And as someone who struggled through Latin A-level and was happy with a B (literally the hardest exam I've ever had to do - harder than any university final or work qualification test) I hold a grudging respect for anyone who gets a degree in greats.

To paraphrase he basically said "even if someone made a stupid and crude joke saying Muslim women in burkhas look like walking post boxes, as dumb as that would be it should still be protected as free speech."
