Where we at with the decluttering?

Got stuff?? Got hoarders in your family or struggle with hoarding or 'collections'?

We used to live in a small NYC apartment and had tons of stuff to declutter before our move. It was mostly my stuff of course. It had been a struggle of mine to declutter for years but thankfully the long-distance move lit the fire I needed. I got rid of bags and bags of stuff - all sent to charity shops. There was no time and I had no energy to sell the stuff.

I did try Marie Kondo's decluttering method but it doesn't really work. Keeping things that 'spark joy' doesn't address the items we keep because of our various emotional hangups (the main reason behind our keeping things we don't need). At least Marie taught me how to fold clothes better.

The only person who helped guide me through the emotional parting of objects was Tracy McCubbin and her great book Making Space, Clutter Free. It's a damn shame she is not as or more successful than Marie Kondo because her methods actually work. One of the biggest ways Tracy helped me was getting over the 'sunk cost fallacy' - that I had spent a lot of money on certain items so I should keep it.

And if you want to get inspired to clean your house just watch a few episodes of this show.

whats the most expensive shit you threw away then, you know you will only need that one cable when you already threw it out 2 days ago

I just donated 75% of my closet two nights ago. That's only because I wear the same three things: jeans, t-shirts and chastity belts of various colors and material.
where i live they just go through the donated clothes and find something thats brand named that can be sold on ebays and throw away the rest

Lean Six Sigma, brothaman.
5S your life.

Take all your shit out and Sort it. Red tags for unused items - no activity in 30 days - disposal.
Easy way - turn your clothes hangers around. If they're still backwards in X days - ditch them.

Set in order - a place for everything, everything in its place

Shine - Clean your room, bucko.

Standardize - develop a uniform, fuck are you a fashion model or something?

Sustain - don't go back to your trifilin-ass nicknack collecting ways.

Get on that Green Belt program at the grind or Blackbelt yourself. Its like being J-woke for bullshit.

I lived with my granny until I was 26 and she was a hoarder, mostly stuff she'd buy on QVC. The entire garage, attic and basement was filled with stuff she bought and never opened! Once I got my own place I vowed to keep all my wrestling memorabilia organized and to sell or trade things that don't have value. It's nice being able to park my cars in the garage and not have a bunch of junk!

I don't have a problem with this because I like orderliness to an extent. I love the feeling when you've completely cleaned the fridge and organised shit in there properly. My main sources of clutter and messiness are that I'll keep frequently used items out all the time - boxes of tea bags, salt, olive oil, etc. - and I refuse to make my bed because I don't see the point in it. Who am I making it for?

In my family there's more problems with losing things or throwing valuable stuff out. My aunt's husband lost some of his hearing, so I bought him a pair of wireless Sennheiser headphones so he could watch the TV at a loud volume and not disturb anyone else. Weeks later, my aunt decides to tidy the house. She sees the charging station for the headphones, she doesn't know what it is, so boom, into the garbage it goes. Dumb inconsiderate bitch.

I generally throw away or donate anything that I haven't used in at least two months and have no immediate use for as a rule when I'm cleaning up. My parents haven't "decluttered" or cleaned their house since I was a kid and it's gotten substantially worse since I moved out. So I think of their house when I'm cleaning too as motivation to just get rid of shit and not come up with excuses as to why I should keep something I just had to dust off.
