You pretty much nailed it. Nothing against where I’m from - most of them are hard working, kind, and friendly - but it held no promise for me. Unlike Pat, I wasn’t a lazy asshole. I worked constantly to earn money for books, studied hard to get good SAT scores, and truly tried to educate myself in the areas where my school couldn’t. It comes down to hard work and a dash of courage. Pat knows nothing of the former and has none of the latter.

Like a lot of kids, he hated school. Hated his teachers, his classmates, homework, bullies being graded, all of it. Hell many kids do, but they suck it up and do it anyway. Not Patrick though, if he was going to suffer the injustice of going to school, he was going to set the conditions. When the final bell rings, he gets to come straight home to several hours of television, either after school kids stuff like Rugrats or VHS tapes of Star Trek or Babylon 5. He also gets one day every two weeks where he gets to take a fake sick day, and watch more TV.

While I have no problem believing he was bullied and constantly beaten up, I also don't believe a bully broke his arm.
