There's this writer James LaFond that writes primarily about violent encounters, urban decay and crime in places like Baltimore and he once said if you notice the ice cream machine at the McDonald's is always broken, the area's going downhill. It's because it takes a certain IQ level to perform the necessary maintenance on an ice cream machine. Not super high, but somewhat above knuckle-dragger territory.
