I've always fucking said this about the movie. ed norton's character makes a fair amount of valid points during the dinner scene, to the extent that the writer didn't even know how to refute them, so they just made him go on an anti-semetic tirade against the mum's boyfriend out of nowhere so that the audience knew his character was bad
I was in a pretty pro Derek and his father crowd at the theater. This was in Huntington, Long Island. I literally remember hearing people say yep and nodding in agreement with Derek's father and then Derek's talk with the kike interloper his mom was stupid enough to bring home.

One thing that bugs me about the dinner scene is that Derek - while he makes sense - looks down during his own arguments, almost as if the director told Norton to act like he's only going off a rehearsed script from his dad and that older guy. How about attacking the arguments instead of trying to undermine him, if you do want to make a point.
