I love how the movie portrays the father as someone who has reasonable views of affirmative action and how its unfair but then later on he says "nigger bullshit" so actually he's evil and that somehow invalidates everything else he says.

The director, Tony Kaye, is an Orthodox Jew (religious, openly racist and hated by Reform and atheist Jews i.e. Hollywood types) and wanted that ending and several other scenes that were cut. Norton and the studio fought for the ending as it is. Kaye disowned the film and I don't think he's ever worked in Hollywood again.

The movie doesnt even make sense without that cut final scene with him changing back into Nigger Hating Me. This movie is shit. I remember talking to my buds in the cafeteria in high school after I watched this stinker. "What is the message here? Dont be a racist? But not being a racist gets you killed in the bathroom apparently"

I've always fucking said this about the movie. ed norton's character makes a fair amount of valid points during the dinner scene, to the extent that the writer didn't even know how to refute them, so they just made him go on an anti-semetic tirade against the mum's boyfriend out of nowhere so that the audience knew his character was bad
