Medical worker here. Please explain what you mean because in no "medical office" were surgical masks ever the default.
Surgical masks are used in surgery to keep gross particles out of the cavity, and they are used on patients with respiratory infections to keep gross particles from getting blasted into nearby people's noses and mouths. Surgical masks have NEVER been used as a protective barrier to filter out bacteria and viruses, because that would be akin to using a chain link fence to keep mosquitoes out.
