A few years ago I decided to drop any "beat the market" bullshit and just use a passive global index fund for a market-average 7-8% a year return. Long term (10+ years), almost no one beats the S&P500 stock index, so why even bother? You're not "the smart one" who predicts this stuff better than everyone else. Market speculation is only designed to make stock brokers richer with everyone else's money.

I'm only talking about my main savings. I get it if you want to speculate on a smaller scale for fun.

I used to live in a super expensive neighborhood in California. I've worked two jobs for almost ten years, that's how I was able to afford it.
I was curious to learn how my neighbors afforded it; were they doctors, lawyers?

I did some digging around on Google Maps, and probably the most common "job" that my neighbors had was "financial adviser." Basically, dudes shaving 1-2% off the "investments" that they were making for millionaires.

Looks like a pretty good scam. When the market is going up, everyone is happy. If the market is going down, financial advisers still get their cut, and they can blame any losses on the market itself.

Or what Pat says. Remember when he was fake shorting Tesla? First of all of course he didn’t he just makes up shit. And second, if he actually did he would of lost big

2nd worst investment I ever made was shorting APPL

Worst investment I ever made:

When Russia invaded Ukraine, the value of their currency took a giant shit. I figured that fundamentally, the Russian economy isn't going anywhere. As long as they have oil, they'll be fine (and they'll always have oil.)

I came *this* close to investing $30K, but decided to dollar cost average it, and I purchased $10K worth of Russian assets using a derivative. Using a derivative was really important here; I knew there was a decent chance that the US would not allow people to invest in Russia directly. But I figured if I did it via a derivative, if they halted investments in Russia, the derivative would just get cashed out.

That idea turned out to be wrong, and one day I woke up and my $10K had become $0.00.

It sucks because my prognosis was 100% correct. The Ruble went up 30% in the month that followed the invasion, and it's up 100% since then:
