But look at the polio vaccine: there were tons of side effects in early versions and persistent side effects even today (those far more rare as the type of vaccine changed 40+ years ago) but the overall result was the eradication of polio in all of the developed world. Here's a little fun anecdote: I dated a psychologist about 8 years ago. I asked her about what the hell is going on with autism these days and she said "we're just diagnosing everybody with it. We don't prescribe anything and rarely do we have any treatment plan. Parents want a diagnoses and we're giving them one".
