In this case the fair catch was called, a penalty of 15 yards was assessed against the defense, and the kicker got to try for a field goal because the half was almost over and they figured why not take a shot at it. Think it was only a 57-yarder.

Because it’s a free kick. There’s no snap and no rush from the defense. It’s like the kick you take after a safety. Someone should try to hit a 70 yard field goal like this one time, especially in a place like Denver.

Field goals can be blocked and need to be snapped. Free kicks are just kicked similar to kickoffs but you're eligible to score if you can make a FG from it. It just never comes up.

A drop kick can be attempted anytime, you just have to let the ball bounce first.
Theres absolutely no practical reason to ever do this instead of a regular placekick though. Belichick just likes to do cheeky stuff because he’s a nerd like that
