The fact that it's imposed would make the "heaven" a hell itself, Potster
I don't think the Bill Gates crew would care, maybe it wouldn't be exactly heaven but things become relative... if everyone's locked-down & forced to eat soy pellet rations, they might appreciate something tasting nice or other carnel pleasures... but you'll need to stay plugged-in & trade some 'pleasure credits'

Oh I see. When you said imposed I thought you meant without consent.

I agree but unfortunately It's not even just proprietary issues, free software is also plagued with stupid decisions that are upheld by cultists. The main problem Terry was addressing was the issue of overcomplexity. Even if a modern system is completely open it's impossible to know it in total, in such a situation the user will inevitably become the used.

Actually c64 had a GUI if you wanted one, I don't think that's the issue at all tbhwitcha brothamann. It's just people not thinking things through in general.
I'm probably wrong, too.

(The more shit to make things easy to operate just makes it harder to understand. Probably just me though)

No you're right but I'm just saying it didn't have to be that way. They choose themselves to implement it like shit and just pile shit on top of shit on top of shit because it's easy it's not necessarily inherent to the GUI in general is all I mean. They fucked it up.

Ok, I'll blame Moore's Law then. The fuckers keep coming up with faster and better hardware so the software can get away with overcompensating with bloat and inneficiency.

IMO it's exactly this. It's why shit goes sideways in spite of the better hardware. The more they abstract shit away (edit:) in a shit manner the more fucked and retarded each new generation of developers are. It's a compounding problem.

There’s also a pervasive sense that everything is always progressing and getting better, when it often is not.

The thing which really depresses me is architecture, but it’s pretty much everything. Monkey Island is better than any game made today.

Movies with small budgets and practical effects look better than marvel CGI.

My first car was a piece of shit but it was an absolute tank and easy to work on.

My grandad’s tools were decades old and better than anything you can buy at home depot now.

Planned obsolescence is a big reason, but it’s not the only one.

Technology in general makes me feel pretty sick. The best thing we could do for humanity is destroy most of it.

I actually quite like you, and agree with most of what you've said here, but I can't help but feel that one day posts like this will be read out at your trial lol

Design by committee, though necessary in some specific cases, is a compromise which has a cost of efficiency at a minimum and the entire point of a given undertaking in the worst case. I don't know that the problem is technology as much as it's poor leadership and the bureaucratic tendency towards being too much of a coward to put one's name on their ideas. The problem is design by committee in an environment full of idiots, the worst and least interested people end up in management and make painfully stupid decisions on subjects they lack knowledge in.

The reason design by committee yields a product which is incomprehensible is because the rationale for it's design is lost to bureaucracy. It didn't have to be this way. It's a shame.

More people should make their own stuff. That's how to counter this. Terry was right.

If I’m really in the UK like @Sue Lightning says, the good news is I wouldn’t get a trial, your judges can now discern truth and motive from innocuous statements on social media, there’s no need for trials or evidence, awesome!

I joke about it, that I work in a programming language from the 80s because I’m a retard and my company is archaic and that’s true, but it’s also because it’s nice to not have to deal with fuckhead “innovation” or Indians with fake degrees offshore butchering everything.

I’m happy with XML and stuff. There’s this guy I used to work with who had 3 monitors and trackpad ergonomic keyboards and mouse set ups to code faster. It was so retarded and resulted in dog shit work constantly, but he thought he was great because he used a load of hot keys and short cuts I didn’t understand. You get more work done with basic Microsoft mouses and a single monitor and just caring about what you’re doing rather than caring about optimising it endlessly.
