Residential Long Island beach towns can get very quiet in the winter. I used to run along the Long Beach boardwalk in the winter and there was nobody around and that's a pretty densely populated area near a LIRR station etc.
Gilgo Beach is much more remote and given its proximity to NYC, I suspect the other bodies are unrelated and the area is a dumping ground for other murderers. I wouldn't be surprised if the other 6 are individual one-time murderers.
I think her name was Shannen Gilbert. She ran out of a trick's house one night so scared (and probably drugged up and paranoid) she also ran from the driver who was waiting for her. I think they found that she "drowned" in water not deep enough to get your socks wet. Death by misadventure. They cleared the trick whose house she ran from in about 30 seconds. (A clear sign the cops weren't interested in getting to the bottom of it.)
There was always a suspicion that the Gilgo Beach killer was known to and protected by Suffolk County law enforcement. The police chief in charge at the time was removed from his position because he beat the hell out of a dude that broke into his car (and stole pornography!)
This is all from memory, but I bet I've got the details largely right.
And I would also agree that it is likely Gilgo Beach was used as a dumping ground by more than one killer (or groups of killers.) Probably a lot of 55 gallon drums of toxic waste in the bushes out there, too. The kind of people who need those places find the best ones and have to share.
