I don't like people but I'm good at shooting the shit, and i have too much shame/decency to just autistically blow past people. I don't live in a doorman building anymore but anytime I interacted with the doorman, i was in, at minimum, a bad mood

The way I always figured it is it must be a fucking boring job. Unless you're an automaton, you want some human interaction. 30 seconds of my time and a basic acknowledgement that I recognise that you're a real person with a life, family etc costs me nothing, makes their day a little better and, yeah, might prove advantageous to me at some point in the future. Win win

This is true but it's highly annoying having to interact with a gregarious doorman that works a regular schedule so you see them all the time. Two times no one wants to talk: leaving for work, and coming home from work
