I love that after decades of tricking people into thinking he's Italian
He is only 1/4 Italian. Life really is such a series of flukes. If he'd been born Robert Admiral (his mom's maiden name), would Scorsese (who is obsessed with Italians) have decided to cast him in every movie?

Would he have had the chance to play Vito in Godfather II?

Yeah, he's mostly English and Dutch or something. The wop kids in his neighbourhood growing up called him Bobby Milk because he wasn't visibly negroid like them.

Another one is the East Coast Mick/Wop hybrid. Travolta and David Caruso for example. Both half Irish. Caruso got the ginger curse so was cast as Irish cops. Travolta got the dark hair and chest rug so Tony Manero etc

Another funny fluke of mom's maiden name vs. dad's name is Mario Batali. He's only half italian -- hence the red hair from his mom. If he were born with his mom's maiden name, would he ever have become a celebrity chef?

"Italian American" is such a larp anyway...just because Naples was port of call for many leaving a dismantled Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early 1900s, meant when they arrived on Elis island they were called 'wop's...but many of these were really Jews, gypsies, Vlachs, Albanians, even Maronites and Greek Orthodox from the Levant, and locals from Crete, all "passed thru".

His first name is Mario, I don't think he would have had much trouble.

I'm sure that's true, but someone's last name in 1905 would give you a pretty good idea of where they were from.

Robert Rear Admiral. Because he's a Rear Admiral.

I remember someone posting a clip of him and Gerard Depardieu whacking their shmeckles together in some old movie. Fuckin Rear Admirals.

Joe Matarese is the only real Italian American out there.

Mario Shaughnessy doesn't sound like a culinary genius
If you want some Pot Tawk Wednesday :brothaman_sm: think about all the last names in your family you don't even know about...how many people know their great grandmother's maiden name even? You have as much blood from all those "random" last names you don't know about as your own... fawkkkkkkkkk

Maybe he'd be cast as sea captains all his life.

Both of my parents and both of my grandfathers went by their middle names. I didn't learn my dad's real name until I was like 15. Didn't learn one of my grandfather's until after he died. I'd never suspected I only knew him by his middle name even once.

In a couple of years he'll be a drooling imbecile forced into getting a photo taken with Jim Norton just like Muhammed Ali.
