Isn't the point of the scene to show how into his old life he was even though it's been many years since he abandoned it? And that deep down, he hasn't really changed. I think the scene conveys that pretty well.

I really liked the book and movie back in High School, but sort of missed this even came out.
Looks like it got good reviews and Owen A Forrem seems to think it's decent as well...

that's what I figured about the whole movie. He succeeded in getting away and staying away for 20 years but as soon as he came back he fell right back into the old routine, showing he really wasn't much better than sickboy.
He is. They brought all 4 back, and I feel they wrapped up all their stories well. At least they made sense based on the characters and their trajectories.
