So it's a powerplay between Reddit Corporate (the ones making money) and the cabal of Powermods (the ones doing it for free).
The issue has been presented as "the poor mobile phone users!" and "blind people can't access reddit without these apps!" when in reality it boils down to one thing: moderator privileges.
The apps make it very easy to powertrip if you're in that inner circle. If a user pisses you off, click one button and they're banned from the 500 subs you moderate. Then you're free to taunt them in PMs. The basic reddit app would make you have to go sub to sub and ban them individually. Too time consuming.
Naturally all the powermods convened and decided to frame this very important issue for them as a cause for the good of reddit. r/nba literally didn't celebrate the Nuggets winning their first NBA Championship because the powermods ruled all subs must be shut down on Monday, and of course the powermods that infiltrated the r/nba sub complied.

Yeah I agree I’d never go there to debate politics with people or anything like that but if you avoid any gay opinion subs you can get some good advice on practical things. It’s great to be able to take a picture of something and ask a question to plumbers or electricians or locksmiths and get a quick answer so you can go and fix shit yourself.
